Gaon"s era (VI-XI century) occupies the most important place in the history of Judaism. Gaoons were heads of Talmudic Academies in Babylonia. Over time, they achieved superiority over the Ancient Palestinian Center, after which most of the Jewish diaspora recognized them with their religious and spiritual leaders.
Thanks to the multifaceted operation of Gaon, it was the Babylonian version of Judaism, based on the Babylonian Talmud, received the greatest distribution in new Jewish centers in North Africa and Europe. The monograph Robert Brodi describes the intellectual and social activities of boons in a wide historical and cultural context.
Special attention is paid to the struggle of Babylonian academies with various competing government institutions and spiritual authorities - from rivals in the environment of orthodox Judaism to sectarians and free-rope, rejecting a rabbinistic tradition at all. The author also traces the influence of Arab culture on the work of the Jewish intellectual elite
