The allowance for the first time in Russian literature gives a single outline of the development of the Christian Church (the expandable as a system of different faiths and denominations) as a social institution from the time of its formation to the present. The presentation is based on the problematic principle: the development of church institutions is considered from the point of view of the state of their organizational unity. Volume 1 of the publication covers the period from the founding of the church to the formation of the prerequisites of the Protestant Reformation - the time of acute dogmatic discussions that had significant consequences for the organizational structure of the Christian institutional church. In book 2, in a wide historical context, issues are highlighted related to the development of church orthodoxy and the formation of various deviations from it. Throughout the millennium under consideration, dogmatic discrepancies introduced an element of instability in the universalist claim of Christianity, which in the organizational sphere led to numerous church divisions on a confessional basis
