The history of the Great Patriotic War is usually understood as the history of military actions and the feats of soldiers who fought on the front lines. However, one of the most important factors that allowed the Red Army to halt the advance of German troops and transition to a counteroffensive was the efforts of many people, especially women, teenagers, and elderly individuals who were in the rear during those years. Historians Wendy Goldman and Donald Filtzer explore the history of total war behind the front lines in their book. How did the state manage to mobilize all its resources, including labor, in such a short period of time? Was the work of state bodies responsible for emergency initiatives effectively organized? What role did corruption among officials and the black market play in the life of the rear? And how did people manage to endure the tremendous hardships - hunger, hard labor, and outbreaks of epidemics? Drawing on an extensive body of recently disclosed archival documents, the authors examine the relationships that developed between the Soviet state and society during this dramatic period - from the German invasion, the start of mass evacuation, to the country's reconstruction. Wendy Goldman is an honorary professor at the Paul Mellon University at Carnegie Mellon University. Donald Filtzer is a distinguished professor at the University of East London.
