“Past Jacob” is the first part of the monumental cycle “Joseph and his brothers”, from which Thomas Mann considered his best works. In the artistic interpretation of the Old Testament plot, he poses eternal questions about the life, origin of man and the search for God, thereby erasing the boundaries between the past and the present.
The epic opens the detailed story about the difficult fate of Jacob. Having stole the birthright and the father’s blessing with his brother Isav, he becomes an exile in his native land and finds a shelter in his uncle Lavan"s house. Here, Jacob will have to go through the prepared tests with honor, knowing both joys and sorrows: to meet the love of her life Rachel, to serve for her for long seven years, by the will of chance to take her sister, to give birth to twelve sons, one of whom - Joseph - is destined will take a special place in biblical history
