A novel about wartime, about the complex fates and dangerous work of unknown heroes who joined the strike force of Beria's special forces.
Summer of 1944. Soviet troops are carrying out an offensive operation under the codename "Bagration." Caught off guard by such a powerful strike, the Germans are forced to hastily evacuate their rear services. In the area of Orsha, the head of the local Gestapo branch goes missing after seizing a secret archive of the intelligence network. A group led by Maxim Shelestov is sent to search for documents of exceptional importance. One of its members, Boris Kogan, almost reaching the target, suddenly encounters an enemy patrol. For a counterintelligence officer, this would mean certain death... That is until one of the Germans appears suspiciously familiar to Kogan at the last moment...
This series is good because it conveys the correct main idea: in Lavrentiy Beria's NKVD, people knew how to trust because he knew how to trust himself. The story of Major Shelestov's group is similar to the real story of a prominent Abwehr agent, former staff captain of the Tsarist army Nelidov, who ended up in the Lubyanka in September 1939. Against the backdrop of Nelidov's story, the adventures of Maxim Shelestov and his comrades described in this novel seem even more plausible. (S. Kreml)
