After the defeat in the second war with Rome, the Macedonian kings restored the power of the country and once again challenged the republic. Initially, military success accompanied Macedonian weapons, and the Romans suffered setbacks. But then everything changed, on June 22, 168 BC, in the battle of Pydna, the army of King Perseus was defeated, and the king himself was taken prisoner. The Third Macedonian War became a turning point in the history of the Eastern Mediterranean. The confrontation between the legion and the phalanx ended, there was no longer a force in the Oecumene capable of stopping the Roman pressure to the east. The invaders divided the Macedonian kingdom into four republics, which later became Roman provinces.
