The book by the Russian writer, poet, historian, and philosopher Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (1865–1941) is the last in the trilogy "Faces of Saints from Jesus to Us" ("Paul. Augustine", "Francis of Assisi", "Joan of Arc") and belongs to the final years of Merezhkovsky's creative work, when he turned to the genre of fictionalized biographies, combining a Christian historical novel with a religious-philosophical essay. The central idea that permeates the entire trilogy is the salvation of humanity through a return to the foundations of Christian faith. It seemed that Europe was going through agony: the victory of totalitarianism, the triumph of atheism, and the ominous rumblings of a new world war... Describing the advance of evil, Merezhkovsky believes in the ultimate victory of Light and Reason: "The Kingdom of the Spirit is possible even for people like us, because even in such humanity as it is now, the procession of the Spirit from Jesus to us is taking place through the Saints."
