This work is an attempt to analyze the history and characteristics of the development of Russian historical painting of the 18th-19th centuries. The particular feature of this work is the author's attempt to present to the reader an objective picture of the evolution of Russian historical painting in the widest spectrum, including the works of little-known or completely unknown Russian historical artists of the 18th-19th centuries. For the first time, the creative and life biographies of many of them are presented, along with their artistic views and contributions to the development of Russian historical painting. Each chapter of the first section reflects the cultural, socio-psychological characteristics of the corresponding time period as a whole, as well as the life and creative aspects of historical artists. When determining the time period to which an artist's work belongs, the development of the artist, as well as the characteristics of their life and work, were taken into account. Significant attention was paid to the time of the artist's greatest achievements from the perspective of the development of Russian historical painting. The second section analyzes the main features of the evolution of Russian historical painting of the 18th-19th centuries. A comparative characteristic of the features of European mannerism and the transition from the synthetic stage of the artistic wave of the cognitive process of ancient Russian painting (Dionysius School, Stroganov School) is given, showing similar changes. It is shown that both in European and Russian painting, the artistic wave of the artistic process includes analytical, synthetic, and symbolic stages that succeed each other, reflecting the process of artistic generalization. A description and comparative analysis of some (usually the most characteristic) Russian historical paintings of the 19th century at different stages of the artistic wave of the cognitive process of this period are given. Other significant trends in the evolution of Russian historical painting of the 18th-19th centuries are also analyzed.
