Anna Matveeva is the author of the novels "Dyatlov Pass, or The Mystery of Nine", "Yes!" and "Every Hundred Years", the collections of stories "Lolotta and Other Parisian Stories", "Hidden Rivers", "Katya Goes to Sochi", as well as the books "City Dwellers" and "Painted Girls". In the novel "The Enviable Feeling of Vera Stenina", the story of a female friendship-rivalry is told. Vera, an art historian and single mother, constantly envies her friend Yulka. Yulka, on the other hand, is always lucky, and she doesn't envy anyone, although she could envy Vera, as she possesses a unique gift - to feel paintings in a special way: she talks to portraits, senses the scent of painted flowers, and hears the music played by the artists depicted in the paintings... The novel is multi-layered: an anatomy of envy, a combination of Western European tradition with Russian mentality, a light detective accent, and - in full voice - a hymn to art and beauty. 'The story of female friendship bordering on sharp envy (if not hatred) is filled with an elegant play on words, and at the same time can serve as an excellent guide to the history of art: by constructing the image of her heroine, Matveeva shows how to correctly look at the masterpieces of painting, turning the depiction into a set of auditory, chromatic, and tactile metaphors'.
