The name of Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702-1789) - one of the most virtuoso and sought-after artists of the 18th century - is well known in our country and abroad. His portrait of 'The Chocolate Girl' belongs to the most recognizable in the world. Other works by Liotard, although not as famous, are highly valued in the art market today, reflecting the growing interest in his creativity. In the 21st century, eight monographic exhibitions dedicated to him were held in Geneva, Amsterdam, New York, London (twice), Edinburgh, Los Angeles, and Dresden. Meanwhile, there are many mysteries associated with the name of the Geneva master. One of them lies in the almost complete absence of his own works, as well as works sold by him (because he was not only a painter but also a collector-merchant) in Russian historical collections, although these collections were created at the very time when his fame was at its peak. This study attempts to clarify the reasons for this situation, summarize the documentary evidence regarding his connections with Russia, individual works created or circulated in the context of these connections, as well as gather the available information about the few of his works that did end up in Russian state and private collections.
