The Time of Troubles, or the Smuta, refers to the events of the first Russian civil war in the early 17th century, the severity of which was exacerbated by the intervention of neighboring states such as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden, who seized Russian territories. The Smuta was a catastrophe that resulted in huge human casualties, economic devastation, and territorial losses. Was the Smuta a coincidence or a necessary stage in the development of the Moscow Tsardom? What factors led the country to a critical state and what allowed it to overcome the disaster? What are the lessons of the Smuta and what perspectives were revealed during this period? These and other questions are discussed in the book by historian Sergey Shokarev. The author aims to show the place and significance of the Time of Troubles in the overall course of Russian history. According to his concept, the Smuta was a serious crisis of the first stage of Russian autocracy. On the one hand, it was a consequence of the strain of the military mobilization model created by Ivan III, and on the other hand, a result of distortions in the autocratic system under Ivan the Terrible. However, the events of the Smuta created several alternatives to the autocratic tradition that were not realized, and the development of the autocratic model continued. Sergey Shokarev is a candidate of historical sciences, a senior researcher at the laboratory of Old Russian culture of the School of Advanced Humanities Studies at RANEPA, and the author of a number of scientific and popular works dedicated to the socio-political and cultural history of medieval Russia.
