Li He (790–816) is a major Chinese poet, in the history of literature standing in terms of the power of imaginative thinking, the unrestrainedness of imagination in the same row with such giants as Li Bo and Li Shangyin ("The Three Lis"). In China, he is called the "Devil of Poetry" for the infernal nature of his plots, in Europe, the "Chinese Mallarmé" for the vivid metaphorical nature of his verse and the obscurity of its meaning. The esoteric revelations of his poems convey the tragedy of his personal earthly fate. In Russia, almost nothing was written about him, and his works were not translated. This collection (over 80 poems) introduces the poet to the Russian reader for the first time.
