Widukind of Corvey (c. 925-980) was a German historian, born into a secular Saxon feudal family, who received a classical education and became a monk at the Benedictine Corvey Abbey in Westphalia.
Widukind of Corvey is the author of the chronicle "Deeds of the Saxons" in three books, in which he seeks to glorify the exploits of the Saxons and their kings. He narrates the history of the Saxons and the Saxon dynasty of kings (Henry I and Otto I) based on old sagas, songs, traditions, ancient and medieval sources, as well as his own knowledge. The events in the "Deeds..." are brought up to 967, and information on the history of Saxon-Slavic relations is provided. He wrote this work at the request of Otto I's daughter, Abbess Matilda of Quedlinburg. This chronicle was later used by Thietmar of Merseburg.
This edition will be of interest to students and professors of historical disciplines at universities, military historians, and all those interested in the relationships between Slavic and Asian peoples in the Middle Ages.
