Giovanni Boccaccio is one of the founders of European literature of the Renaissance era. "The Decameron" is Boccaccio's most significant work. It is a collection of one hundred piquant, witty, and romantic novellas that celebrate life in all its sensual manifestations. Young people, escaping the plague that ravaged Florence, retreat to a country estate. There, over the course of ten days, they entertain themselves by telling each other stories, each of which is a vivid fragment of the Italian life in the 14th century.
