Jack Matlock was the US ambassador to the USSR from 1987 to 1991. He met with Mikhail Gorbachev many times and was familiar with his allies and enemies. In June 1991, Matlock warned Gorbachev about a growing conspiracy against him, but he was not heard. In his book, Matlock tells the story of the collapse of the Soviet empire, the key events that led to it, and who bears the main responsibility for it. Since the book was written after Matlock had left government service and the collapse of the USSR had become a fact, the author openly discusses many details of these events that were unknown to the general public.
