Pavel Skoropadsky, a lieutenant general in the Russian army, was the head of Ukraine ("Hetman of the Ukrainian State") in 1918. He attempted to implement wide-ranging reforms here, but due to the actual occupation of Ukraine by German troops, internal power struggles involving various forces from Ukrainian nationalists to Russian monarchists, anarchists, and Bolsheviks, Skoropadsky failed to maintain the first independent Ukrainian state in history. Despite a general military mobilization, the army of the Ukrainian State was defeated, and power was seized by the nationalists under Symon Petliura. Skoropadsky recounts all of this in his memoirs, written with many vivid details.
