American military historian Colonel David Glanz analyzes the course of the Smolensk battle of 1941, which is a series of military operations in the territory of the Smolensk region in the central part of Russia. Glanz describes the onset of the group of the Army "Center" in the direction of Western Dvina and Dnieper, fighting for Mogilev, Rogachev, in the Smolensk Boiler, battles near Gomel and Spiritoboy, fights for the Great Luke and Salney. This is a frank, unreasonable story based exclusively on documents. The author attracted colossal material: daily operational reports, directives, orders, telephone conversations of armies, reports, critical assessments prepared by the headquarters of troops, memories of eyewitnesses of the opposing parties.
The narrative illustrates genuine German tactical cards. The appendix gives comprehensive information about the state of the vermhtack troops and the Red Army
