'The Fredegar Chronicles' is one of the largest sources on the history of early medieval Western Europe. The history of their creation is mysterious, and the author's name is unknown. Scholars can only guess where and when the text was created. One thing is clear: this work, written in a language difficult to understand, captures the process of the birth of the ethnic identity of the Franks. A people, still recently considered barbaric, begins to see themselves as the heirs of a great vanished empire. In the 'Chronicles', folklore motifs and historical events are intricately intertwined, recreating the atmosphere of the long-gone glorious era of the Merovingians, which became the first step in the formation of modern European civilization. For the first time in Russian, a complete translation of 'The Fredegar Chronicles' is being published. The text is provided with detailed historical, philological, and cultural comments.
