On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Ioanno-Predtechensky Skete at Optina Pustyn, its Chronicle is being published, which is one of the sources shedding light on the monastic life within it, the visits of famous hierarchs, abbots, and residents of monasteries, representatives of the clergy, writers, and public figures to this renowned abode. Within its pages, the chronicle of past events reveals and conveys the Optina tradition and a unique monastic culture. The Chronicle is a unique literary work, a monument of the 19th to early 20th centuries, capturing not only the spirit of Optina monasticism but also the spirit of elderhood. The first volume of the publication includes two parts of the Chronicle: covering the years 1820-1861 and 1865-1882, narrating the founding of the skete at Optina Pustyn, the lives of its residents under the elders Lev, Makary, and Ambrose. The second volume of the publication includes the third part of the Chronicle covering the years 1900-1918, recounting the lives of the skete residents under the elders Joseph, Varsonofy, and Nectarius, as well as the revolutionary events in Russia. This volume contains an index of the individuals mentioned in the Chronicle.
