The Reverend Joseph of Optina (1837-1911), the closest disciple of the elder Ambrose, was called by those around him "the child of obedience" because he never contradicted the actions of Elder Ambrose in deed, word, or even thought. According to I. M. Kontsevich, for the elder, Father Joseph was "the closest not only in appearance, but also in spirit, in the strength of obedience, dedication, and love."
In the present book from the series "Optina Heritage," the biography of Elder Joseph, compiled in 1915 by his spiritual son G. M. Nikolsky, is published for the first time with some abridgments. In addition, the publication includes reminiscences of the elder, his teachings, and letters.
