The book by British historian and writer Philip Ziegler is a study of the spread of the Black Death, or plague, in medieval Europe. The author writes about the origins and causes of the plague, the processes and methods of its transmission and infection. By examining and comparing numerous accounts from medieval chroniclers and the works of later historians studying the epidemic, Ziegler characterizes the state of medicine, societal prejudices of the time, and the role that the "great plague" played in the economic and social life of Europe in his book.
