After a major victory over Sweden in the Northern War, Tsar Peter I adopted the title of 'emperor'. If before that the country was called Muscovite Russia, Muscovite Kingdom, Russian Land, or Russia, from now on it was symbolically transformed into an 'empire'. Did this mean that some fundamental change occurred in the country's development? And if so, what exactly changed? Did the concept of empire not exist in the perception of the state elite before? And what did Peter I and his successors understand by 'empire'? Did this understanding lay the foundations of imperial consciousness that still exists today? Ricarda Wulpius' book explores the 18th century as a turning point in the country's history and shows that the process of forming an empire in Tsarist Russia did not follow any exceptional 'special' path. The discourses and practices of civilization, acculturation, and assimilation that the Russian state operated with reveal numerous parallels with the mindset and actions of other colonial empires. By analyzing the institution of subjection and the practice of taking hostages from non-Christian peoples of the East and South, the researcher shows how the idea of assimilation that existed in Russia before the 18th century is combined with the European civilizing discourse and leads to the formation of a comprehensive imperial self-awareness of the Russian elite. Ricarda Wulpius is a professor at the University of Münster, specializing in the history of Eastern Europe.
