Although the Battle of the Kalka River, which became the first clash between Rus and the Mongol-Tatars, is included in the mandatory curriculum of all school and university textbooks, it remains largely mysterious to historians. Debates continue about the location of the battle, as modern maps do not show a river with that name. Discussions unfold not only about the day, but even the year of the battle. There is no consensus on the number of combatants, the route of the enemy's movement. How is the famous comet of Halley and Karl Marx connected to the battle, did the Russian hero Alyosha Popovich participate in the battle, what role did the Kalka River play in the fate of the Mongol commander Mamai? Can events of the past be reconstructed now, 800 years later? Based on the analysis of the entire body of historical sources, the author answers these and other questions.
