The Battle of Borodino Field became the central event of the Patriotic War of 1812 and thwarted Napoleon's plans to defeat the Russian army in a decisive battle. Despite having to leave Moscow and retreat south to take positions near the town of Tarutino, the French emperor found himself in a losing position: his once great army had significantly lost its combat capability during the months of campaigning in the east. Borodino became the first step towards a turning point in the Patriotic War, which would lead to Napoleon's retreat from Russia and his final defeat in France two years later.
