Valeriya Narbikova (b. 1958) is one of the most unusual contemporary authors. After the publication of her novel "The Equilibrium of the Light of Day and Night Stars" in 1988, her name became synonymous with the new Russian literature, everything that is irritating and provocative in it. Her refined prose, filled with linguistic experiments, is very far from the current literary mainstream. Publishers categorically refuse to publish her new texts. However, she has been translated into major European languages. Narbikova started as a poet. Perhaps that is why her novels and essays are structured like poems or long poems. They contain many erotic scenes, but they are described modestly and "strangely," immersing the reader in the peculiar world of her characters' experiences.
