Mary Seacole was a Jamaican nurse who gained fame for organizing hospitals during the Crimean War. In her memoir "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands," she recounts the difficulties she faced in achieving her goal of helping wounded soldiers. The government had long prohibited sending women to war zones, so Seacole had to borrow money to travel to Crimea and open the "British Hotel" to accommodate soldiers.
During the Crimean War, large concentrations of troops engaged in combat on the peninsula, leading to high mortality rates from diseases and injuries in unsanitary conditions. Mary Seacole cared for the sick and dying soldiers day and night, including under fire on the battlefield. She did not distinguish between her own and others: Seacole saved the lives of many Russian soldiers. For her care and selflessness, British soldiers dubbed her "Mother Seacole." "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole" is the memoir of a heroic woman who overcame the prejudices of the Victorian era to help people.
