The brief period of the thaw is one of the most significant, yet at the same time contradictory and understudied in Soviet history. "The cult of personality is splattered with mud, / But in the fortieth year / The cult of evil and the cult of uniformity / Are still in vogue," Boris Pasternak commented on the historical events in May 1956. Sergey Chuprinin's book is structured as a chronicle of the main events that took place in Russian culture from March 1953 to August 1968. The commentators are either direct participants, or eyewitnesses and contemporaries, whose testimonies are presented in diaries, letters, memoirs, and archival publications. The culture of the thaw era, seen against a broad socio-political background, comes alive here in dialogue with the expectations of Soviet society, as well as in a dramatic conflict with state totalitarianism and official uniformity.
