The study aims to comprehend the apophatic discourse in Russian literature. The monograph is the first comprehensive cultural study of the issues of apophatics in Russian literature. The author refers to the theological and philosophical concept of the apophatic tradition of knowledge of the Divine principle through negation and applies it to the field of poetics of A. S. Pushkin, M. Yu. Lermontov, I. S. Turgenev, F. M. Dostoevsky, L. N. Tolstoy, A. P. Chekhov, I. A. Bunin, S. A. Yesenin, A. Platonov, O. E. Mandelstam, V. Khlebnikov, and other authors. The apophatics of Russian artistic culture constitute the broadest object of study. The apophatic tradition, an ancient concept, today radiates into all research humanities paradigms. The apophatic tradition, manifested in Russian literary culture (including myth, folklore, and literature) on a linguistic level through lexemes such as 'unsaid', 'unknown', 'unthinkable', 'unseen', etc., through the ontological image of evening and non-evening light, the collision of day and night, light and darkness, is closely linked in the Russian variant of existence with the folklore tradition and, more broadly, the folklore consciousness of word artists. Images of the unknown, invisible in Russian fairy tales are associated with the reversibility of the world, the search for the 'other kingdom', 'dark light', and ultimately - with death. In literature, apophatics imply the manifestation of alterity in the artistic text, often associated with the 'Thanatos - Eros' paradigm. The research methodology includes ontogermeneutic analysis of the artistic work, aimed at highlighting the philosophical questions of the text, revealing the ethos of life and death. The research results can be used in university lecture courses on cultural studies, philosophy, special courses on the history of literature of the 19th - early 20th centuries, courses on oral folklore, and in school practice.
