This novel is the pinnacle of Thomas Hardy's (1840-1927) work, the greatest British writer of the late Victorian era. With just the title alone, the author challenges a society mired in social contradictions of the capitalist world. Indeed, the main heroine, seen as immoral and even criminal from the perspective of the prudish English bourgeoisie, cannot possibly be considered 'pure'. The work was banned by censorship, and critics mercilessly branded it... Nonetheless, its artistic merits are undeniable. The story of a poor girl who sacrifices herself for her family continues to captivate readers' hearts to this day.
