The work of Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826–1889) is often called the "satirical encyclopedia of Russian life".
In the novel "History of one City" (1869–1870), the writer makes fun of the vices of Russian society of the 19th century, reveals typical features of bureaucrats-officials. "History of one city" is, in essence, the satirical history of Russian society in the second half of the past and at the beginning of the present century, set out in the form of a comic description of the city of Glupov and the bosses who consistently ruled them ... ”I.S. wrote Turgenev.
Tales of Saltykov-Shchedrin also generally and grotesquely recreate the contemporary to the writer society. In the "Tale of how one man fed two generals" (1869), the theme of bureaucratic arbitrariness, the inability of genuine officials for work, the desire to live at someone else"s expense rises. In the fairy tale, the Wise Piskar (1883) Saltykov-Shchedrin reveals the cowardice and political adaptability of part of the intelligentsia after the defeat of the revolutionary organization "People’s Volya"
