"Petersburg novels" reflected the identity of the literary talent of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. Critic V.G. Belinsky wrote: "The distinctive nature of Gogol’s novels are - simplicity of fiction, nationality, perfect truth of life, originality and comic animation, always defeated by a deep sense of sadness and despondency. The reason for all these qualities lies in one source: G. Gogol is a poet, a poet of real life. "
