“Giving” is one of the most noticeable phenomena in the field of children"s literature of the second half of the 20th century, the first novel-antiotopia, written specifically for teenagers. In 2014, a film made based on the book was released on world screens with Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in the lead roles. The “pink giraffe” released the “giving” in the new cover, and followed by “in search of blue”, the second part of the famous tetralogy Lois Lowori.
This is what Lois Lowori herself writes about this book: “I made Jonas"s cozy and safe world like the reader. I threw everything out of it that I did not love myself: violence, poverty, prejudice and injustice. All my characters are polite and courteous - because I like these qualities in people so much. Beautiful world! In this world, you don’t even need to wash the dishes. Ah, how I would like to dwell on this! But the ideal world cannot be built in reality, so the writer has a choice in front of the main character, an ordinary teenager: to stay in this ideal world or abandon him in order to save himself and the one, contrary to the prohibitions, managed to love.
Unlike adult anti-utopias George Orwell, Evgeny Zamyatin or from the teenage “Winter Battle”, Jean-Claude Murleva, in the “giving” there is no external struggle and violence. All discoveries and the whole struggle occur in the inner world of Jonas. Nevertheless, the plot of the book, with its unexpected turns and merciless details, holds the reader in tension and breaks the usual stereotypes.
Immediately after the release in 1993, the novel caused a huge amount of disputes. “Giving” even fell into the list of books that the groups of parents tried to ban: they believed that with young readers it was impossible to speak on such serious topics. But, despite criticism, the book was included in the school program of the middle classes of the American school, received many prestigious awards, including Newbury Medal of the American Library Association. Its total circulation amounted to now 5.5 million copies.
"giver" managed to love many Russian readers. In 2014, many participants sent their work on the book by Lois Lowori to the contest "Book of the Year - Choose. For example, Ariana Fagmieva (13 years old, 7th grade, school Gymnasium No. 10, Perm) sent her drawing and such a letter: such a letter:

I believe that this drawing should be, because the book says that Jonas was not like everyone else. He had an amazing eye color. In addition, he perceived the color. I did not have enough images of the protagonist at the beginning of the book, which is why I decided to correct this defect.
