Connected speech plays an important role in the communication process of children with each other and with adults, in their education and upbringing. Children in the older group of a kindergarten (5-6 years old) with normal speech development should be able to do the following:
• use complex sentences of different types,
• use direct and indirect speech when retelling,
• independently compose stories based on personal experiences, a story picture, or a series of pictures,
• retell short literary works without significant omissions,
• select several adjectives for a noun, replace a word with another word of similar meaning,
• use words related to human relationships.
However, many children of this age group exhibit a specific peculiarity in their connected speech. Its insufficient formation is evident in both dialogues and monologues of preschoolers. This is confirmed by the difficulties in programming the content of extended statements and their linguistic expression. According to the observations of T.B. Filicheva and G.V. Chirkina, the speech of 5-6-year-old children most often shows disruptions in coherence and sequence of the narrative, significant omissions of essential elements of the plotline, noticeable fragmentary presentation, and violations of temporal and cause-and-effect relationships in the text.
Many authors (V.K. Vorobyeva, L.N. Efimenkova, N.A. Cheveleva, T.A. Tkachenko, N.S. Zhukova, E.M. Mastyukova) provide methodologies and technologies for developing connected speech, based on constructing coherent statements using visual images (object pictures), stimulus symbols, from which sentence structures and story plans are created.
This manual offers additional material for speech therapy sessions. This material includes story pictures, texts, questions related to them, visual-graphic schemes, and story plans.
The story texts are designed to reinforce and activate the use of prepositions, relative and qualitative adjectives, and verbs in children's speech.
