Forty-two tales included in this book were recorded in the 19th - early 20th centuries from the words of folk storytellers by folklorists and ethnographers, as well as school teachers and representatives of the national intelligentsia, then translated, adapted for children's reading, and artistically designed by remarkable translators and linguists such as P. A. Polyakov, V. N. Kharuzina, E. Z. Baranov, V. A. Gatsuk, S. D. Kotsyubinsky, V. Kh. Kondaraki, and others. Most of these tales are being published in Russia for the first time in almost a century and a half, and as a single collection, illustrated with works of Tatar and world painting, they have never been printed before.
