During the Great Patriotic War, around 8.7 million refugees resettled from the western regions of the USSR to its eastern part. Approximately two million Jews, who found themselves as refugees, faced the additional burden of anti-Semitism. The government made too little effort to ensure that local authorities took good care of them. Hunger and diseases led to a high mortality rate among refugees in their new places of residence, especially in 1942. Despite this, party officials succeeded in spreading the myth of the successful absorption of millions of evacuees. The author reconstructs the conditions that led to a surge in anti-Semitic sentiments and provides new statistical data on refugees, allowing a glimpse behind the scenes of the largest and most intensive Jewish migration in history.
