The collection, entitled by Gogol Mirgorod, entered four stories based on the Ukrainian folklore. Starlavetsky landowners - a sad story of love of two spouses, love, beyond which the heroes are no longer seen around the world. Taras Bulba - in anything that is not similar to the previous story about the life of Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, where the fighting spirit reigns, the thirst for military glory and love, which is stronger than the debt in front of the motherland and before the Father. The third story is Viy - a soul-free story about the dark forces of the underworld, in a terrible fight with which, yielding to fear, a seminarist dies. And, finally, the story of how Ivan Ivanovich was quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich - a humorous sketching of the city of Mirgod, it seems that never an aging story about how suddenly in an open place quarreling friends. A vivid example of how a trifle tapping can turn around not just to hostility and a trial, but almost the meaning of all life
