Toni Morrison is the Nobel Prize laureate in Literature for 1993, the first African American woman to receive this award. One of the most important American writers of the 20th century, she has left a lasting impact on the history of world literature. Toni Morrison has an amazing ability to capture the essence of a country and era in each of her novels. "Beloved" embodies the hardships and pain of 19th century America, a time when slavery was more terrifying than death. The story of the slave Sethe, as described by Morrison, is about fear, tragedy, and the choices that are sometimes so difficult to make. But most importantly, like all her books, it is about unconditional, boundless love. After all, there is nothing stronger in the world than a mother's love. "Beloved" is one of Morrison's most famous novels, for which the writer received the Pulitzer Prize in 1988.
