Author: Shmelev I.S., "Sun of the Dead": Ivan Sergeevich Shmelev (1873-1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on the spirituality of the Russian people. While in emigration, "not for a moment in his spiritual fervor does he stop thinking about Russia and agonizing over its misfortunes." The epic "Sun of the Dead" became the first significant work that the author published in emigration. It reflects the most terrible events that Ivan Shmelev was unfortunate to experience: the Red Terror, famine in Crimea that began with the conquest of territories by the Bolshevik army and the introduction of a "new order" into the previously peaceful life, and, most terrifyingly, the death of his son in the dungeons of the Extraordinary Commission. This work conveys the "despair and universal destruction of the early Soviet years." The book was translated into many languages and soon brought the author wide recognition.
