Over the years of working in elementary school, I have come to realize that if you don't engage with children during the summer after first grade, or if you engage with them only during the last week, they will forget practically EVERYTHING! They will read very slowly, which will lead to difficulties in math class: it will take half the lesson just to read and understand the problem! Most kids will forget not only a few spelling rules learned in first grade, but even how to write some letters or which way to turn them! And I'm not even mentioning handwriting and writing speed! How can we introduce new material if part of the class can neither read nor write! By the end of first grade, teachers have automated counting skills. The beginning of second grade... You can't even imagine how many different answers you can get when asking kids to add 7 plus 5. And yet, this can easily be avoided. You just need to work a little bit every day with your first grader from yesterday. Trust me: it's beneficial from an educational standpoint! Adults have to work a little even during vacation, and a child is also a person, a family member, just like everyone else. Absolute idleness will bring nothing but harm. 'Summer Home Gymnasium' contains material that will allow your child to regularly and effortlessly review everything learned in first grade. The guide includes 45 lessons. Therefore, writing should be done every other day. On days free from this guide, I would recommend working with the book 'How I Taught My Daughter the Multiplication Table' and reading the books assigned by the teacher for the summer (if possible, read books from the list every day!). Make sure to incorporate study sessions into your child's summer routine. For example, 40-60 minutes after breakfast. If your child is very active and restless, break the work into two sessions of 20-30 minutes each. Then, conduct the sessions after breakfast and after lunch. In the morning, when the mind is fresh, do what is more challenging for the child. Such sessions will not tire the child, discipline them, and give them the confidence in their knowledge and skills from the very first day of second grade. The guide includes many non-standard tasks. The 'Explanations for the Lessons' detail how to reason during their completion. Once your child learns to reason, they will breeze through regular school tasks! 5th edition, stereotyped.
