The book "Sugar Child" by Olga Gromova is based on the words of Stella Nudolskaya, whose childhood fell at the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s in the Soviet Union. It is a very personal and soul-stirring story about how five-year-old Elia, happily growing up in a loving family, suddenly becomes the daughter of an "enemy of the people" and finds herself in a terrifying, incomprehensible world: after her father's arrest, she and her mother are sent to a camp in Kyrgyzstan as "family members of a traitor to the Motherland" and "socially dangerous elements." Despite all the trials, hunger, and illnesses they have to endure, Elia and her mother do not lose heart: they read poetry, sing songs, joke, and truly take care of each other. "Sugar Child" is largely a "coming-of-age novel," a story about love, as well as about dignity and freedom. Elia's mother best describes freedom: "Slavery is a state of the soul. A free person cannot be made a slave." "Sugar Child" is a young adult novel by Olga Gromova, the chief editor of the professional journal "Library at School" (Publishing House "Pervoye Sentyabrya"). The book has been translated into Dutch, was long-listed for the "Kniguru" award (2013), was awarded the V.P. Krapivin Diploma (2014), included in the "Liked by Children of the Leningrad Region" list (2014), shortlisted for the "Best Russian Books of 2014: Children's Choice" (2015), shortlisted for the Leo Tolstoy Prize "Yasnaya Polyana" (2015), and included in the list of outstanding children's books of the world "White Crows" compiled by the Munich International Youth Library (2015). Recommended for middle and high school-aged children.
