In the first paragraph of his book, Gunther Vermusch modestly notes that he did not aim to write a history of counterfeiting, but merely wanted to describe the most vivid scams with counterfeit money. However, his stories about these scams formed a coherent text, and ultimately (hardly against the author's will) it turned out to be a history of counterfeiting, which found a place for rogues of ancient times, medieval scoundrels, and the schemers of the 20th century who took over the baton from them. Vermusch is not interested in ordinary crooks. His heroes are a skilled engraver capable of replicating any stamp, a brilliant inventor who has been deceiving the police for years, crowned fraudsters who, of course, did not consider themselves as such, yet without a twinge of conscience ordered the minting of "gold" and "silver" coins with a copper base, and even a group of schemers who almost bought the central bank of an entire European country with counterfeit banknotes. The translation is made specifically for this edition. Gunther Vermusch (1936) is a German historian, economist, writer, journalist.
