The Russian Orthodox Church, considering drunkenness an absolute evil, actively participates in the work of rehabilitation and prevention of alcoholism. One of the most effective methods of healing from alcoholism (and other forms of addiction) is the "12 Steps" Program, which has been used for over 80 years in the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Community. Over this time, millions of people around the world have become sober and healthy thanks to it. However, doubts still exist: can an Orthodox Christian, while maintaining unconditional loyalty to the Church, seek help from AA? Father Meletius (Webber)'s book convincingly shows that membership in AA and working on the "12 Steps" Program, which has roots in early Christianity, in no way contradicts or hinders membership in the Orthodox Church. On the contrary, AA has already given a huge number of Christians the opportunity not only to overcome sinful addiction but also to live more deeply in their faith and discover a new, previously inaccessible page in their liturgical life.
