In 1931, at the First All-Union Conference of Workers of Socialist Industry, Joseph Stalin stated: "We are 50-100 years behind the advanced countries. We must cover this distance in 10 years. Either we do it, or we will be crushed." The task was accomplished: in the 1930s, the Soviet economy was developing at the highest rates in the world, as a result of which the USSR caught up with, and in some indicators surpassed, the leading Western countries.
Documents collected by Alexander Poskryobyshev, Stalin's personal assistant and secretary, show how this was achieved. A vast amount of factual material from party archives and various state bodies allows us to recreate the full picture of "Stalin's great leap forward."
