These memories, long entered into the 'golden fund' of German memoirs about the war on the Eastern Front, are a true confession of a Wehrmacht officer. Colonel Luitpold Steidle (1898-1984) fought against the Red Army from June 22, 1941, up to the capitulation at Stalingrad, where he commanded the 767th Grenadier Regiment of the 376th Infantry Division (376. Infanterie-Division). In his book, he detailed the invasion of the USSR, the fierce battles of 1941-1942, the brutal fighting for Stalingrad, the encirclement of Paulus' army, and the agonizing ordeal of the German troops in the Stalingrad 'cauldron.'
"About six in the morning, the entire area is rapidly filled with the increasing thunder of artillery. Soon reports come from the front, and I hurry with my adjutant to the observation post, which offers a wide view across the heights and valleys. It is still dim. Explosions continuously resound. The thunder of artillery echoes along the entire river valley, from north to west, resembling a wide thunderstorm front. Without waiting for instructions from the division headquarters, I give the order to prepare for battle. Everything indicates a major Soviet offensive from all bridgeheads on this side of the Don. This heralds the beginning of the Red Army's operation, which will surpass everything that has come before..."
