The question of the aesthetic canon of the Stalinist era and the related issue of the interaction between aesthetics and politics in the post-war USSR are central yet largely unexplored fragments of the cultural history of the "small" 20th century. Which institutions and establishments facilitated communication between the political and aesthetic spheres? What role did the Stalin Prize in literature and art play in this process? Dmitry Tsyganov's book is the first study entirely based on archival sources, providing a detailed description and comprehensive analysis of the institutional structure of the Stalin Prize in literature. The author not only examines the details of the work of the Committee for Stalin Prizes and the nuances of awarding prizes but also reconstructs the key cultural trends that defined the dynamics of the development of the socialist realist literary project.
