Military counterintelligence is a special service aimed at combating enemy agents, sabotage, and intelligence activities, with the disruption of the Armed Forces' operations in deployment zones, movements, and regroupings, as well as in the frontline zone (transport hubs, recently liberated territories, etc.) during wartime. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the military counterintelligence operated at the level of military districts. After the war began, the military counterintelligence units became part of the fronts, and in March 1943, the Main Directorate of Counterintelligence 'SMERSH' of the People's Commissariat of Defense of the USSR was formed, abbreviated as 'SMERSH'. From that moment on, the effectiveness of this special service's activities significantly increased. How the results contributing to victories in subsequent battles (operations 'Citadel', 'Bagration', Jassy-Kishinev, etc.) were achieved is told in this collection. The articles included in the collection allow us to understand the specifics of military counterintelligence activities from the beginning of the war through its development, through the fates of 'SMERSH' employees who carried out tasks of remarkable complexity in the frontline and rear areas as scouts, saboteurs, radio game specialists, and recruiters.
