After the October Revolution, the three Baltic republics - Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia - gained their independence and for several decades their territories became a platform for activities against the Soviet Union. In 1940, the republics became part of the USSR, and a year later the Great Patriotic War began, with the Baltic states becoming a battleground for Soviet and German intelligence services. The author, who lived in the Baltics for many years, uses archival documents to reconstruct the picture of the intelligence agencies' confrontation that unfolded in Danzig (Gdansk), Königsberg, Kaunas, Memel (Klaipeda), Riga, and Tallinn in the 20th-50th years of the last century. Among the characters in this book are the chief of the Kaiser's intelligence, Colonel Walter Nikolai, the Reich Commissioner of Ukraine Erich Koch, Trotskyists who fled to Lithuania, diplomats, agents, and intelligence officers. The unknown actions of the group led by Yakov Serebryansky ("Yasha"), love and passion as methods of recruitment, the use of double agents, and other details about the intelligence agencies' confrontation in the Baltics are discussed.
