The French poet, a prose writer, a journalist, critic and traveler Theophilia Gauthier went down in the history of literature as the “last romantic” and the first representative of the new, “Parnassian” school in French poetry. Dozens of short stories and several novels belong to him, among which the most fame is used by the Captain Fracass (1861–1863) written in the late period of the work.
This historical and adventure novel transfers the reader to France from the times of Louis XIII, along the roads of which, along with the troupe of stray comedians, wandering-under the stage pseudonym that gave the name a book, is the impoverished Baron de Sigonyak, in love with the young actress Isabella. Rivalry in love, duels and chases, robbering ambushes, sudden disappearance, happy salvation, a desired wedding and the discovery of an old treasure - all these signs of the novel “Cloak and Swords”, coupled with the glorification of free acting life, provided the book with long -term popularity in the homeland of Gauthier and beyond its borders , as evidenced by many reprints, theatrical productions, and later adaptations.
