Harry Irving Hankok (1868-1922, in Russia his surname was transcribed "Gankok") - an American chemist and writer - the author of many works about Jujutsu. Vasily Sergeyevich Oshchepkov (the ancestor of the Soviet judo and one of the founders of Sambo) wrote about this propagandist Jiu-Jitsu: "Irwin Gankok ... back in 1897, he began to study Juu-jutsu in his homeland with one of the Japanese familiar. Then he studied her in Nagasaki under the leadership of the master of Inoue, who was in this city as a teacher of Juuu-jutsu under the police. After Gankok, he took several courses for the best native experts in this case in Iokogam and Tokyo ... ". Hankok published a number of books about Jiu-Jitsu, setting his goal, "... to give, if possible, all the best in relation to both the basic principles of hygiene and the methods of protection and attacks ..."
