The book contains work written by him over the forty years of his literary activities. This is a whole gallery of large-scale, holistic-volume ideological portraits of Russian writers and thinkers of the XIX-XX centuries from Lermontov and Pisarev to Lunacharsky and Plekhanov, Solzhenitsyn and Iskander. Historical and literary studies and critical essays are enraged and acute, often in a genre of a certain intellectual detective. But at the same time they are really addressed to our time, to his urgent spiritual problems. These are the problems of the open, as his author calls, consciousness, which is characteristic of the overwhelming majority of modern people who have long already living outside the world of religious faith. They independently, as it were, from a blank sheet, to respond today to the most important moral and philosophical issues of human existence
